In 2005 the Furniture Bank of Central Ohio was known as Material Assistance Providers (MAP). For seven years MAP had been collecting donations of furniture and household items to distribute to families in need, but the organization’s future was uncertain. They had moved twice in two years, and they were leasing a small building that was inconvenient both for donors dropping off items and clients picking them up. MAP needed more space to keep up with the increasing need for their services. It would cost $1 million to purchase a desirable building in Franklinton. Cramer & Associates conducted a feasibility study to test the goal and provided counsel for the organization’s first-ever campaign.
The study revealed a major challenge: community members did not understand what “Material Assistance Providers” meant. We guided the organization through an exercise to change their name to the Furniture Bank of Central Ohio. During the early stage of the campaign, founder Jeff Hay also stepped down and a new president was appointed. With new branding and new leadership, we turned our focus to recruiting a campaign committee of local champions.
The campaign committee paved the way for success. They opened doors and championed gift requests to many corporations on behalf of the Furniture Bank. They surpassed the campaign goal in 18 months, raising over $1.2 million to secure the Furniture Bank of Central Ohio’s current facility on Yale Avenue. Every day, the Furniture Bank helps 23 families affected by homelessness, domestic abuse, and disaster at their home in Franklinton.
